Environmental Attorney Peter Van Oot Joins Nature Conservancy Board of Trustees

(Lebanon, NH)  Attorney Peter D. Van Oot of Downs Rachlin Martin PLLC has been elected to the Nature Conservancy Vermont Chapter board of trustees. He began his two year term in April.

A long-time leading environmental lawyer in New Hampshire and Vermont, Van Oot’s experience encompasses utility and institutions policy issues, permitting, environmental and regulatory law. He is lead permitting counsel on significant development projects in Vermont and New Hampshire and negotiated environmental settlements with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Justice and state regulatory agencies.  Van Oot is a charter fellow of the American College of Environmental Attorneys and serves on the Vermont state Brownfields Advisory Committee. He previously served on the advisory boards of Vermont Law School’s Environmental Law Center and Land Use Institute as well as on Gov. Howard Dean’s Council of Environmental Advisors.

Van Oot also advises commercial clients, utilities and institutions on significant policy and legal issues that require a range of expertise in corporate and regulatory law. With a practice concentrated in Vermont and New Hampshire, he provides strategic advice and serves as outside general counsel to a number of for-profit and non-profit corporations and institutions, with a focus on transactional, governance and regulatory matters.

The Nature Conservancy is a nonprofit organization that works to protect ecologically important waters and land in 55 natural areas in Vermont. Since 1960, the Vermont chapter has acquired and managed land in every county of the state. The Nature Conservancy promotes the protection and restoration of natural communities through the Champlain Valley Native Plant Restoration Nursery and several programs including the Vermont LEAF Program and Wise on Weeds.
