Zachary R. Gates Admitted to Patent Bar

(Brattleboro, Vt.) Zachary R. Gates, an associate in the Brattleboro office of Downs Rachlin Martin PLLC, has been admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. A member of the firm's Litigation Group since 2005, Gates focuses on intellectual property litigation, environmental and toxic tort litigation and insurance coverage litigation.

"Patent litigation remains one of the hottest areas in the law, and DRM's work in this field continues to grow," said Larry Meier, a director of the firm and chair of the Intellectual Property Practice Group. "Zach's knowledge of the rules and regulations of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and his ability to skillfully navigate the federal judicial system, are tremendous assets that will provide substantial benefits to our clients."

Gates also is admitted to practice in Vermont and New Hampshire, the United States District Courts for the Districts of Vermont and New Hampshire, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He is also a member of the American Chemical Society.

As a student, Gates was a law clerk in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Region III Office of General Counsel in Philadelphia and a Certified Legal Intern in the Cumberland County Public Defender's Office in Carlisle, Pa. He graduated cum laude from Penn State's Dickinson School of Law, where he also received the ABA-BNA Award for excellence in the study of intellectual property law and an award for posting the highest grade in environmental litigation. In addition, he served as editor-in-chief of the Penn State Environmental Law Review. Gates was a Phi Beta Kappa and Schreyer Honors College Scholar at Penn. State, where he received a bachelor's degree in chemistry with a minor in mathematics.
