DRM Family Law Group: Alimony & Maintenance

At Downs Rachlin Martin PLLC (DRM), the experienced and dedicated family law team can help you navigate the legal issues related to alimony in Vermont.

Vermont family law - alimony and spousal support

In the state of Vermont, when a divorce or dissolution of a civil union is granted, the Court may order either spouse to make temporary or permanent maintenance payments (alimony or spousal support) to the other spouse if the Court finds that the spouse requesting maintenance lacks sufficient income/assets to meet his/her reasonable needs. Other factors the Court may consider include:

  • the spouse’s ability to support him/herself at the standard of living established during the marriage
  • the cost and length of time necessary for the spouse requesting maintenance to obtain education/training to find appropriate employment
  • the length of the marriage
  • the age and health of the parties
  • the ability of the spouse from whom maintenance is requested to meet his/her reasonable needs while paying maintenance.

From highly complicated financial assets to simple amicable agreements, our legal team works to achieve favorable post-marital maintenance terms for our clients.

When the situation calls for it, the Family Law Team collaborates with our colleagues in DRM’s Tax and Estate Planning Groups and with other financial professionals to fully address our clients’ financial concerns.

DRM’s family law attorneys provide first-rate, cost-effective client service.

Caryn Waxman and Amber Barber, co-chairs of the DRM Family Law Group, have each practiced family law exclusively for more than a dozen years.
