Practice Focus
Bill Schroeder represents clients in all aspects of real estate development and operation, including establishment of ownership and management entities, acquisitions and sales, regulatory approval, financing, construction, leasing and taxation. His clients primarily are developers and businesses, with an emphasis on multi-family residential and commercial projects.
Bill represents developers (and occasionally opponents) in zoning, Act 250 and environmental permit proceedings in Chittenden County and throughout Vermont. He prepares and negotiates architectural and construction contracts for owners and builders, with an emphasis on the construction management and fast-track methods of design and procurement, and he has instructed lawyers and other real estate professionals in environmental and construction law.
Bill also represents local and out-of-state lending institutions in real estate loans, including construction and development financing. He has organized both resort and primary residence condominiums and planned communities in Vermont and New Hampshire and has managed national sales registrations for units in these communities. He assists many clients with the formation and structuring of business entities and regularly advises on choice of entity.
Significant Matters
Bill’s recent work includes assisting with the development and sale of units in a planned community within a popular Vermont resort and with environmental and land use permit applications for a national home improvement company’s entry into Vermont. He has also recently prepared architectural and construction management contracts for a number of major school addition projects throughout Vermont.

Bill is listed in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business and in The Best Lawyers in America. He was recently ranked among the top five percent of attorneys in Vermont by Super Lawyers® magazine. The listed attorneys were identified by their peers and through the independent research of Law & Politics® magazine. Bill received Martindale-Hubbell’s AV® peer rating, the highest rating attainable.
Prior to joining DRM, Bill served as a law clerk for the Honorable James S. Holden, Chief Judge, U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont. Bill recently served two terms on the Board of Regents of the American College of Mortgage Attorneys, a nationwide organization of leading lawyers in the field of real estate finance.
Community Involvement
Bill has served as a member and chair of the Charlotte Planning Commission and has volunteered his services for library and senior center development projects in the Town of Charlotte.
Publications/Presentations
Bill was the first author of the Vermont chapter of the National Mortgage Law Summary, a publication of the American College of Mortgage Attorneys. Bill also served for many years as the Vermont reporter for a treatise on limited partnership laws.
