Practice Focus
Larry Meier is a registered patent attorney who represents leading technology, Fortune 100 and other clients in intellectual property matters in Vermont and elsewhere in the country and the world. He chairs the Intellectual Property Law group at DRM and teaches patent law as an adjunct professor at Vermont Law School.
Larry has extensive patent prosecution experience in the electrical, computer and mechanical arts and enjoys an active trademark practice. In addition, Larry assists clients in resolving disputes involving patent, trademark and other intellectual property matters, including matters pending in state and federal courts and in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Larry frequently works at the interface of business and intellectual property. He has assisted clients throughout the world in drafting and negotiating a wide range of intellectual property agreements, both at DRM and while employed as a senior intellectual property attorney with the IBM Corporation. Larry has led numerous IP due diligence investigations in connection with venture capital financing and other transactions. Larry also assists clients with proactively developing and refining intellectual property strategies for their businesses.
Significant Matters
Assisted a client in developing and running a major patent program that will produce a robust patent “fence” around its core unpatented technology.
Drafted and negotiated to signature a highly favorable settlement for a defendant in a multi-defendant patent litigation, where other similarly-situated defendants were forced to pay substantially more to settle.
Protected venture capital investor by uncovering, through an in-depth due diligence investigation, fundamental flaws in the ownership of the target company’s core intellectual property.
Clears, registers and helps enforce trademarks for companies ranging from small start-ups to Fortune 100 businesses.
Assists a range of corporations and research institutions in licensing patents, trademarks and other intellectual property to small and large businesses under terms and conditions that regularly exceed the expectations of the client.
Represented the patent owner in patent infringement litigation featuring carefully structured discovery early in the case designed to focus on a key issue, resolution of which resulted in a quick and highly favorable settlement.
Professional Activities
Larry teaches intellectual property law as an adjunct professor at Vermont Law School. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America 2008. Larry received Martindale-Hubbell’s "AV" peer rating, the highest rating attainable.
Community Involvement
An accomplished musician, Larry is President of the Champlain Philharmonic Orchestra. He is a member of the solicitations committee for the United Way of Chittenden County, Vermont. Larry also coaches Nordic skiing for a local Bill Koch league.

Personal Interests
Larry is an avid sailor, bike rider and downhill and Nordic skier, enjoys vegetable gardening, plays the cello and travels domestically and abroad with his wife and two children whenever possible.
