Practice Focus


Jim Ferguson is a patent attorney in the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice Group. In addition to his law degree, Jim brings advanced degrees and more than 14 years of technical experience in the field of chemical engineering to his practice. Over a period of 10 years as an engineer for The Dow Chemical Company, Jim advanced from senior engineer, responsible for process modeling and advanced control, to production specialist at the SARAN™ Barrier Polymers technology center and at the manufacturing plant.

During four years at OMYA, Inc., Jim worked as a production engineer at a calcium carbonate ISO 9002 manufacturing plant and provided process engineering support for the processing plant.  His doctoral research at MIT included hydrology computational techniques, field experiments conducted with the cooperation of the Camborne School of Mines at the Rosemanowes Geothermal Energy Project in Cornwall UK, as well as laboratory work at Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico.  Jim also taught recitation classes in industrial chemistry and reactor engineering at MIT.

Professional Activities


Jim worked as a summer legal intern for the Rutland County public defender in Rutland, Vt. As a student at Vermont Law School, he was selected as a top student in his Legal Profession (ethics) class. Jim is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Community Involvement


Jim is a member of the American Legion (Middlebury VT Post 27.) He also is owner/operator of Moonshadow Farm in Bridport, Vt., and a member of Vermont Grass Farmers Association and NOFA-VT (Northeast Organic Farming Association.)
