Professional Focus
Barbara McVicar is a paralegal in the Real Estate & Environmental Law Group. Her practice concentrates on supporting attorneys in bringing large- and small-scale commercial real estate projects to successful closing. Barbara has broad experience in many aspects of the real estate transaction process including title research, drafting title opinions, preparing transfer documents and tax returns and working with title insurance companies to secure title commitments and policies. She worked previously as a real estate paralegal with several law firms in Vermont, and served as right-of-way agent and title search consultant for the Central Vermont Public Service Corporation from 1990 - 1994. She has been with DRM since 2005.
Accomplishments
Barbara works closely with a resort developer and provides support to DRM’s attorneys in the preparation of closing document packages for sales of its vacation properties to individuals.
She recently coordinated and participated in a major historical team research project for a client interested in the origins and current status of mineral rights on rural land of substantial acreage.
She has searched over 1500 residential, farm, resort and commercial real estate titles in Vermont and New Hampshire. She serves as an in-house title research trainer, working with associates and paralegals looking to gain expertise in land records work. Additionally, she has experience in trust and estate administration work, including drafting and filing probate documents, calendaring and tracking probate deadlines, managing trust and estate financial accounts and working with decedents’ families in the resolution and disposition of estates.
Professional Activities
Barbara served on the Vermont Secretary of State’s task force to create a best practices manual for municipal land records, concentrating on uniform indexing standards.
Community Involvement
Barbara was a member of DRM’s team in the 2007 Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival.
Publications/Presentations
Barbara taught the “Introduction to Real Estate Law” course at Woodbury College for six years. She was an in-house presenter at a recent Real Estate Group seminar and has taught title searching to private students.
